About This Training Course
Providing a lifesaving first aid response in a remote or isolated site where medical assistance may be delayed or evacuation is required, requires specific instruction and practical training. The course teaches preparation for first aid emergencies based on the site and in line with legal and workplace requirements, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
What You Will Learn
- Assess casualties, ensuring provider safety, and triaging multiple casualties in remote environments
- Management of casualties over extended waiting periods (delayed medical evacuation)
- Managing head, neck, and spinal injuries in rugged, uneven outdoor terrain
- Wilderness wound care, blister management, and field infection control
- Completing incident documentation, debriefing, identifying psychological impacts, and post-incident support
- Contacting and relaying initial, concise information to emergency services (PLB, sat phone, radio, grid references)
- Treatments specific to remote conditions: severe hypothermia, hyperthermia, altitude effects, frostbite
- Application of arterial tourniquets and haemostatic dressings for life-threatening bleeding
- Australian venomous snake bites and spider bites in wilderness conditions

Course Delivery & Format
Conducted at community venues in Mount Beauty, Bright, Myrtleford or on-site at your workplace.
Completed at your own pace from your phone or computer prior to attending class.
Certificate Renewal Requirements
Valid for 3 years (CPR component recommended for annual renewal).
- Entry Requirements
- Physical fitness to manage outdoor scenario exercises and perform 2 minutes continuous floor CPR.
- Unique Student Identifier (USI).
- Appropriate clothing for outdoor practical scenarios (boots, weatherproof gear).
- Assessment Activities
Assessment is practical, supportive, and scenario-based to ensure true competence without unnecessary stress.
Realistic outdoor emergency simulations involving prolonged casualty care, stretcher improvisation, remote communication protocols, and multi-casualty triage.
Practical demonstration of tourniquets, pressure immobilisation, CPR, and trauma splinting.
Theory knowledge assessment on remote risk assessments and emergency evacuation planning.
